How to Hang a Valance and Curtains
Hanging a valance and curtains over your window will add dimension, texture and style to any room. Window curtains with a valance give your window treatments a finished, designer look. If you want to block out light, a valance and full-length blackout panel curtain is your best choice. If you are more interested in decoration and only need to block minimal light, then a valance over sheer curtains is a good choice. It's important to measure the window and decide what type of curtains you want before you buy the curtain hardware. A cafe rod will be sufficient to support a sheer curtain, but you will need a stronger curtain rod to support heavier fabrics such as blackout panels. Also, the larger the window, the sturdier the curtain rod will need to be.
Gather Materials
Before you start hanging your window treatments, make sure you have the right tools to get the job done.
- Tape Measure
- Pencil
- Drill
- Valance Rod
- Curtain Rod
- Wall-Mounting Brackets
- Screws
- Level
Choose the Correct Hardware
The wall-mounting brackets for your curtain rod should be half the length of the brackets for your valance. For example, if your curtain brackets are 2 inches long, your valance brackets should be 4 inches long.
Install Curtain Brackets
Use a tape measure and pencil to mark the placement of the first bracket. When choosing where to place your curtain brackets, keep in mind where you will be placing your valance brackets. Once you've figured out where to place the first curtain bracket, mark the spot and then mark the placement of the second bracket. Use a level to make sure both your marks are aligned. Use a drill to attach the brackets with screws at the places you marked with the pencil.
Install Valance Brackets
Measure and mark the placement for your valance brackets. Use a level to make sure they're straight and then use your drill to attach the brackets with screws.
Hang Your Curtain
If you have tab-top curtains, run the curtain rod through the tabs and hang the rod on the brackets. If you will be using curtain rings or other curtain hardware, attach the hardware to the curtains before attaching the hardware to the rod and then hang the rod on the brackets.
Hang Your Valance
Run the valance rod through the top of the valance or use curtain hardware to attach the valance to the rod, depending on which style of valance you've chosen. Attach the valance rod to the brackets and adjust the valance so that the fabric is spread out evenly.
