The portability of your laptop allows you to take your work with you and always be connected. However, that portability also exposes your computer to more wear and tear. Consider a few of these practices and accessories to help you protect your laptop from different types of damage.
Laptop cooling: Excess heat is damaging to even the best laptop computers. A powerful processor and other components can generate a lot of heat inside a laptop or notebook, compromising performance and even damaging some laptop parts. To prevent your computer from overheating, you might consider a laptop cooling desk, which lifts your computer away from your lap or other surface, allowing air to circulate through the vents underneath. A laptop cooling pad can pull a lot of heat away from your computer, as well.
Laptop bags: Protect your laptop or notebook from bumps and scratches by carrying it in a laptop bag or backpack. Many laptop backpacks feature a padded compartment for your computer. Be sure to select a bag that will fit your laptop screen size.
Screen protection: Even the best laptop and notebook screens and keyboards can pick up a lot of grime. A screen protector not only blocks your screen from scratches and smudges, but can act as a privacy feature if the screen is polarized. Also, clean your computer screen with a solution that is half water and half rubbing alcohol to prevent damage to your laptop from harsh cleansers.
Safeguard your data: Not all damage that threatens your laptop computer is physical. Laptop and notebook computers are vulnerable to data loss through hard drive failure and malware. Back up your laptop hard drive regularly and keep your anti-virus software up to date. Doing so can significantly reduce the hassle of hardware failures and malware infections.
Laptop locks: If you're forced to leave your laptop out in the open -- at work or other locations -- safeguard your computer from theft with a laptop lock and securing cable. The lock prevents anyone from accessing your computer files while engaged, and a steel cable keeps the machine secured to a wall or other durable surface.
Adapters: When you travel, you may encounter foreign electrical outlets and different voltage standards, which will harm your laptop if you attempt to use them. Carry an international power adapter with you and you'll keep your laptop safely powered wherever you go.
