The material over the box springs is similar to the material for the ruffle- a cotton/polyester blend I think. It washes and dries without any problem and no wrinkling.

It's plain... similar to a sheet. Obviously you don't see it because it's under the mattress but it's durable and washes and dries well. The ruffles might need to be pressed tho I didn't and it still looked fine. Wash in cold water (no shrinkage) and dry on medium / low heat

If you want, you can cut off the middle part that fits under the mattress leaving about four inches or so from the lace and just tuck under the four inches or so instead of lifting the mattress. I've done that before with another king bed skirt b/c it is a pain to manipulate that big mattress!

Not sure about the twin XL, I bought it for a queen and it is a perfect fit.

I'm not sure about the twin. I bought two; one Queen and one King. My only problem with them is there is no "slit" in the corner to accommodate a footboard. I'm tempted to cut it but don't want to ruin it. The footboard corners do not hang nicely. With that said the overall fit is perfect. I would recommend these if you don't have a footboard. Hope this helps.
