"How does the cushion stay on the chairs without ties"

I guess it would depend on the make of your chair. For me, I have an open back chair with little back support. However, strong and well structured, the seat is u-shape. I do not have a problem with the cushion staying on the seat of the chair, if you stand up & sit down. Some people like to slide in & out of a chair. In that case it may present a problem. As for me I'm well pleased. And, it is made in the USA.

I am buying a beautiful hand-woven rattan chair, which will need the luxury in the seat that this pillow offers. It is the same color as the chair, so it will hopefully fade into the chair. But when ones butt is seated, the five (5)inches of plush it provides will be felt and sincerely appreciated.
