No the rug is not loopy - so you don't have to worry about the cat's claws getting stuck or it messing up the rug. The red is more of a burgandy than red. I am very very impressed with the quality of this rug - it's plush but not overly so - the colors are vibrant and give the living room that comfy look I was going for. I hope this helped
