My son bought this bed for his college apartment. He said it was a bit time consuming to put together, definately need 2 people due to the size and weight. It is very sturdy, looks great, and he is very satisfied. He put the Comfort Dreams 11" memory foam mattress on the bed, without a box spring and it is fine.

Different lighting will affect the way colors photograph and are shown. The 3rd image is likely the best representation as it is a close-up.

Yes. But we chose not to. A lot will depend on the type of mattress you choose. In our case box a box spring and mattress would pretty much eliminate the height of the head board (floor to top of headboard measures 3 feet). From floor to top of our Serta mattress without a box spring measures 27".
