How to Select Seat Covers for Dining Chairs

If you are updating your dining room and your home decor, dining chair slipcovers are a low-cost solution and offer many options. Before you purchase a new set of chair slipcovers, however, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Chair style, chair size and fabric requirements all play a part in selecting dining chair slipcovers.

Selecting Seat Covers:

  1. Measure your chairs. Dining chairs can range widely in size, particularly with older dining sets. Get the length and width of both the back and the seat of the chair. In addition, measure the space between the outer spindles on the dining chair backs if you're purchasing tie-on slipcovers.

  2. Choose a design and color. Use your current decor as a point of inspiration for this decision. If your dining chair covers are for everyday use, a neutral set will give you the most options; however, colorful slipcovers can also be used for holiday decor or to add a nice pop of color to an otherwise bland room.

  3. Select fabric that is easily cared for. If you have small children or pets, it is important to pick slipcovers for dining chairs that are easy to remove and wash. Stains happen all too frequently at the dinner table, and it is best to select dining chair covers that are both durable and stain-resistant.

  4. Pick the type of slipcover you want. Some dining room chair slipcovers simply drop over the back of a chair, while others will need to be tied on and secured. If the covers are simply for decoration, the drop-on kind will work best; however, for everyday use, tied or fastened slipcovers are more functional. You'll also want to look for slipcovers that have a bit of elastic or spandex if your chairs are an odd shape and difficult to fit.

  5. Update your other linens. You can typically find coordinating tablecloths and cloth napkins that will match your new dining room chair slipcovers to give your room a finished look.
