When it comes to plumbing fixtures, few see more use than bathroom and kitchen faucets. Because they're so heavily used, durability is a primary feature to consider when selecting a sink faucet. There are plenty of functional faucet features to choose from. You'll also want to consider the style of your kitchen, including the sink and surrounding area. Here are a few features you may want to keep in mind as you look for a kitchen faucet that fits.

Buying a Kitchen Faucet:

  1. Scald-guards: A maximum water temperature limit, built into the faucet itself, can help prevent scalds and burns. This can be especially important with little ones running around the house. Kitchen faucets with scald-guard features often allow you to make manual adjustments to the faucet, setting the maximum flow of hot water into the mixture. Between temperature controls on your kitchen faucet and water heater, you can make your kitchen a little bit safer.

  2. Spout height and reach: Look for kitchen faucets that will allow you to work easily in the sink. The height and reach of the faucet spout will determine how easy it is to fill pots, rinse dishes and wash the sink. You can make things really easy by installing a kitchen faucet with a pull-out sprayer and retractable hose.

  3. Handles: Depending on the kitchen faucet you select, you may be able to select the handles separately. Separate handles give another option to customize the look and feel of your kitchen faucet and sink. Faucet handles are also a functional consideration. You can choose a faucet with separate double handles or a single control lever that allows you to adjust water temperature with just one hand.

  4. Mounting styles: If you're installing your new kitchen faucet on an existing sink, check to be sure it's compatible with the sink's mounting space. Often, sinks will have up to five holes for the spout, handles and other accessories like soap dispensers. If you're selecting a wall-mounted kitchen faucet, you won't have to worry about the sink.

  5. Water filtration: Kitchen faucets with built-in filtration can improve the quality of your tap water for drinking or cooking. More advanced features, such as LCD displays and adjustable filter options, can help you control the level of water quality from your kitchen faucet.
