Buyer's Remorse, but mostly my own fault…mostly.
We already have an 12" ComforPedic from Beautyrest mattress with adjustable base, it is now 5 years old. We LOVE it, changed our lives. It was more than double the cost of what they are now but we decided to buy that instead of a car, THAT is how bad our sleep was on an old bouncy non-foam mattress, and it was worth every penny.
The only issue with that 12" is that if you run hot, you will be cooking yourself every night. Once you start to heat up, so does the mattress and feels like it stores the heat, it got to a point where I would have to get up and wander around and wait for my side of the mattress to cool off. My wife does not have this issue so if you are a cold sleeper, lucky you. So when the time came to get a mattress for the guest room, we were excited to get a new one for our bed and move the current one to the guest, that way we could try the 'new' cooling gel in a mattress we already know we love. Long story short(er), the "cooling gel" does nothing. Feels like absolutely no difference from the regular "air cooled" mattress, none. Even got up and went to sleep on the old mattress to compare the same night, still really hot. So loss of a star there.
The other issue which is really not something that can be solved when buying online is the "plushness". Our 12" ComfoPedic is listed as "Firm Plush" (not even sure what that is supposed to mean since it seems like an oxymoron but there ya go - based on Great Offer Stock listing it equates to 'medium' support) so we figured that going with the "Plush" 14" wouldn't be much of a difference but wow, big difference! I wouldn't call this plush in the traditional mattress sense since all foam mattresses feel more firm in general but I would not recommend this for a stomach sleeper, we have had to get flatter pillows and still we both have back pain in the morning, it's just not supportive enough for side/stomach sleeper, although back sleepers will probably be fine. It doesn't seem much different when you first lie down but you really feel it in the morning. If you are used to a firmer mattress, I wouldn't go with this one.
Sadly I think this will go in the guest room and we will take our 12" back, I shouldn't have strayed from what I know works, wish we had just bought another 12" and been done instead of going taller and squishier and more expensive. I'll just have to keep test driving other ways of staying cool.
Also a note that I did not open and assemble the base, I just bought the set because it was actually priced lower than the mattress alone for some reason (less demand for the set I guess?) so I figured, hey, cheaper and free wood for some other project, why not.
