i SCOURED the web for a low profile, minimalist platform bed that didn't have a lot of frou frou or excess to the frame -- i.e., wide sides or sideboards, or big headboards.... because the space i needed it for was not that large and i did not want an overly large frame cutting in to what precious space there was.
i originally saw this frame months ago. but the pictures (and the bedding!) were different at the time and the frame looked like absolutely nothing interesting or appealing to me (it almost looked like a dorm or barracks bed, it was so so plain) so i skimmed it right by. then somehow it popped up again because i was still hunting and i thought oh wow, hmm... new pics and it isn't looking too bad!
this frame comes in 4 colors: grey, black, champagne... and gold, which is what i bought. i initially considered the grey or champagne but, something about the flat colors looked like the big box swedish furniture to me. now, that big box blue do it yourself furniture isn't bad per se and i've certainly had my share of it over the years -- it just isn't what i wanted now. anyway with this frame, grey was too bland. i don't like black. then i thought oh champagne has got to be a nice color with spark, right? but the champagne looked more like a taupe to me than any color with some light sparkle or allure. so... i decided to go with gold. but like others have said, i was still wary b/c it IS hard to buy furniture off the web without truly seeing it up close.
the bed came. two big boxes. about an hour of pretty basic and simple assembly where you are really just screwing in screws to make joints and... voila! there it is!
although simple, this is quite a nice bed. the metal parts are very sturdy. the wood certainly holds my mattress and body weight up fine -- so, 150 pounds on my side of the bed! i would have preferred the wood slats to have a smoother finish to it because i could feel it probably will snag some sheets and i almost got a few splinters while even just laying it out. it is not the smoothest or best wood slats. however, it does seem they will do, and at the price point -- it is fair.
the bed once all done up can be very nice and striking. it's simple. but it doesn't scream cheap. also the gold finish has streaks and modulation which give it some nice texture / dimension. it also shifts and sparkles as the sun hits it -- so it makes the piece look even richer.
i would definitely buy this frame again and even this go around, i bought 2. luckily it turned out to be so nice! the gold color seems to be in very high demand, as i see it is sold out all the time. even when i had my eye on it, it was about 3 weeks before it came back in stock then i snatched it up when it only showed 6 had come in! so as others have said if you see it, buy it!
it is definitely a striking and strong piece. and at a very fair and reasonable price point. and it looks much more expensive when you do it up right!
a very nice find, and a very nice frame! yup-- highly recommended. ; - )
