I needed a table for my 15th floor terrace in Miami. it needed to dry off quickly (rains come and go with little notice here), it had to be wind resistant, it had to be durable, and hopefully, eco-friendly. So the Balthazar seemed to fit the bill. And mostly because it is a crazy good price.
That said, you do get what you pay for. the quality of the mahogany (really? more like orange-dyed balsa wood) is low. Certainly not a grade of wood I'm used to in my architectural renos. And the table is surprisingly lightweight. Good mahog. is never light. The slats that make up the top are cut thin (maybe 1/2") so you wont be dancing on this one. And I doubt it will actually be rot resistant for that long. The finish is so bright orange that I cannot wait for it to begin to fade in the Florida sun to a slightly more palatable grey. If it doesnt fade, I may stain it a bit greyer, which may help protect it too.
But its a good clean design. Nothing offensive. Assembly was a snap (5 minutes, tool required came with it) and most of that was spent wrestling it out of its layers of cardboard packaging. Its a perfect size and a month later, Im still glad I bought it. Lets see how I feel in a year?
