We purchased this rug and two runners sharing the same design (Anatolia Heirloom). The rug is from China, the runners are from India. As noted by several others, the rug and runners are thick, plush, with colors more subtle than shown in the images - an emphasis on ivory, gold, slate blue with terra cotta red highlights (in my view). The rug has a strong, lingering, foul odor. The runners have no odor. We left the rug outside on a tarp - face down, covered - for 5 days and nights in hopes the rug would off-gas before we placed it in the house. We sprinkled baking soda on each morning, vacuumed it each clean evening. It's been in the house over two weeks, and still has an unpleasant fragrance (particularly at one end) though not as strong as when it first arrived. We run an air filter daily and keep the windows open each night to dissipate the smell. Very odd. We've purchased a total of 6 Safavieh wool area rugs; 5 originated in India, 1 originated in China. The only rug with a powerful unpleasant odor is the one from China. Can't know that's the cause with any certainty, of course, but it's possible. We'll continue doing what we can to disperse the odor and hopefully by summer's end (when the windows can no longer stay open all night) the scent will be neutral. The rug is well-fabricated and attractive - it's unfortunate there's an intense aroma to contend with.
