Not far at all. Interestingly enough the edge that is notched out at the top gives you exactly the idea for how to lean against the wall. I have 4 blankets on mine so just enough room for them to hang freely.. I hope this helps.

I don't think so. The wood is finished but it doesn't seem to be anything more than a thin stain- not anything which would repel repeated exposure to water. You could probably purchase water-repelling stain at your local hardware store and coat it yourself to make it work though.

no its not waterproof. do not place in shower. the stain will come off. its a great towel rack for outside the shower area. thats where i used it i love it.
