Ingredients: for Pizza Dough

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • 1 2/3 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

Want to enjoy a home-cooked meal, but feel like you never have time to make it? Food processors are one of those great time-saving inventions that many have yet to employ. From pizza dough to salad dressings, from chopped vegetables to morning power drinks, food processors can cut preparation time in half. And specialty models can double as a blender or offer more attachment options for increased efficiency. Get started using a food processor with these quick and easy recipes.

Quick Homemade Pizza Dough:

  1. Place the warm water in a small bowl. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the water and let stand until foamy, about 3 to 5 minutes.

  2. Insert the blade -- or dough disc if your machine has one -- into the food processor's work bowl and add the flour and salt.

  3. With machine running, pour liquid through the feed tube as fast as the flour absorbs it. Process until dough cleans the sides of work bowl and forms a ball. Then process for 30 seconds to knead dough. Dough may be slightly sticky.

  4. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Sprinkle corn meal lightly on a pizza pan and place dough out on top. Form crusts and brush with olive oil. Finish with sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings.

Fresh Salsa:

Ingredients for Salsa:

  • 3 large tomatoes
  • 1 jalapeño pepper
  • 1 small onion
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  1. Remove the stems from the tomatoes and the jalapeño pepper; peel the papery outer layers from the onion.

  2. Combine all ingredients and pulse until chopped for chunky-style salsa or until well blended for traditional salsa.

  3. Serve with corn chips and fresh vegetables.

Breakfast Smoothie:

Ingredients for Smoothie:

  • 1 1/2 cups plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup fruit juice
  • 1 large banana (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup berries or peaches (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2-1 cup ice
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey
  1. Hull the berries if they are fresh; slice any strawberries in half.

  2. Place all ingredients in the food processor's work bowl or blender jar. (Leave out the ice if you prefer a thicker smoothie.) Pulse until the mixture is smooth.

  3. Pour the fruit smoothie into two glasses and serve. Variation: Low-fat milk can be substituted for the fruit juice.

Garlicky Hummus:

Ingredients for Hummus:

  • 1 can garbanzo beans (15 - 16 ounces)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
  1. Drain the beans, reserving the liquid. Put the beans, garlic, tahini, lemon juice, salt, and 1/4 cup of the reserved liquid in the bowl of your food processor.

  2. Pulse until the beans are pureed.

  3. Pour 1 tablespoon of the olive oil into a small bowl and set aside.

  4. With the machine running, slowly pour the remaining olive oil into the bean mixture through the feed tube until the desired consistency is reached.

  5. Mound the hummus in a bowl or spread it out on a serving tray.

  6. Whisk the paprika with the reserved olive oil and then drizzle it over the hummus as garnish. Serve with warm pita bread.

Butternut Squash Soup:

Ingredients for Soup:

  • 1 small butternut squash (1 1/2 pounds)
  • 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  1. Slice the squash in half and cook it in the microwave for 10 minutes.

  2. Remove the seeds and then cut the squash away from the skin.

  3. Heat the oil in a stock pot and saute the onion and garlic until the onion is translucent.

  4. Add the squash, broth, sage, and salt to the onion mixture.

  5. Bring the soup to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.

  6. Puree the soup in two batches in the food processor.

  7. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.
