Solar lights are an excellent choice for garden lighting. Solar garden lights are affordable, easy to install and only require sunlight to perform. Because they don't require wiring, solar lights can provide light to areas of your lawn or garden that are some distance from an electrical source. Garden lighting is available in designs ranging from simple to elaborate, making solar lights perfect for security or safety purposes and to enhance your existing landscaping.

Using Solar Garden Lights:

  1. Consider placement. Solar lights need access to sunlight during the day in order to store up enough energy to work properly at night. When placing your solar lights, make sure they will have access to the sun. Before installing landscape lights, it is helpful to place a marker where each light will be located in order to ascertain if the lights will be properly balanced in your landscaping.

  2. Install foundation stakes. Push or hammer the foundation stakes for the lights into the ground. A rubber mallet is the best tool to use to hammer the stakes without damaging them. Make sure your foundation stakes are placed the same distance into the ground, or your lights will vary in height.

  3. Attach light posts. Some solar landscape lights are manufactured with the light component attached to the stake and others are separate. If your light component is separate from the post, then attach and secure the light component to the stake. When placing the light component in place, it is important that the solar panel on the light component is positioned to receive the required amount of daily sunlight to operate properly. Most solar lights require eight hours of direct sunlight in order to provide the maximum illumination through the night.

  4. Position remote solar panels. Attach remote solar panels to solar garden lights that will not receive the required amount of direct sunlight. The remote solar panel is connected to the solar light with a wire, and the small panel can be placed in a location that receives the appropriate amount of sunlight. Remote solar panels make it possible to illuminate shaded areas and to maintain balance in the design of your solar lights.

Solar Lighting Tips:

  1. For the brightest light, choose solar lights with light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

  2. Because they do not use electrical wiring, solar lights are perfect for lighting areas surrounding pools and hot tubs.
