Things You Need:

  • Hangers
  • Storage bins
  • Shoe rack
  • Closet storage system

A closet is where we begin each day, and a messy one can easily start the morning off on the wrong foot. Can you find the right clothes for the day? When you find them, are they rumpled and misshapen or are they ready for you to wear? When your closet is organized, you can get ready to face the day without any of that stress. Follow the steps below for organized closet storage that sets a positive tone for your day.

Instructions:

  1. Start with a clean slate. Take everything out of your closet and dust, sweep or vacuum the floor and shelves. By starting bare, you can ensure that the space will stay cleaner longer. For an extra treat, paint or wallpaper inside your closet; it will be a visual treat every time you open the doors. If there is wiring available, hang a light fixture inside your closet, so you can see your clothes easily.

  2. Organize your apparel. Sort through all of your clothes and shoes; set aside any items that no longer fit, that are worn out or that you don't want anymore. Throw away clothes that are worn out. Clothes and shoes that no longer fit or that you haven't worn in over a year can be donated to charity or given to friends.

  3. Separate the remaining items into seasons. Use closet storage bins, like woven baskets, to store your out-of-season clothing. You can either store your bins and baskets in your closet, if you have room, or in another storage area of your home.

  4. Install a closet organization system. There are many wonderful closet storage components, like shelving, drawers and clothing rods, that can be adjusted to fit your closet space. Choose a closet organization system that makes sense to your specific needs and enhances your daily organizational flow.

  5. Make a pile of any unused hangers. You can put these on the rack when the organizing is complete. If you want to switch out all the hangers to a new, matching set, now is the time. Sturdy hangers not only look great, but they also help your clothes keep their shape while they hang.

  6. Hang your clothes neatly. Face all of your clothes in the same direction for a tidy look. Group like items together, so you can find items quickly when you're putting together an outfit. If you like, you can take it a step further and sort your clothes into categories, like color, length, style or whatever is most helpful to you.

  7. Spread them out. Once all the items are back in your closet, space them easily along the rack. Hang the empty hangers at the front of the closet, so they're easily accessible when you need them.

  8. Place a shoe rack in the bottom of the closet or get a hanging one to attach to the closet door. Put remaining shoes on the rack, with heaviest shoes on the bottom and most used shoes up front.
