How to Keep Your White Shoes White

Things You Need:

  • Soft cloth
  • Shoe brush
  • Mild detergent
  • Shoe polish
  • Soft toothbrush
  • Fabric protector

White shoes can add class to any outfit, even the simplest jeans and T-shirt ensemble. Unfortunately, dirt and stains are easily visible on white shoes and will mar the pristine effect that makes white suede shoes and white canvas shoes so attractive. Cleaning your white shoes just takes the right tools and a little time, and the method you use will depend on the fabric of your shoes.

Keeping Your Shoes White:

  1. Rub a liberal amount of soap on the outside of cloth shoes. Scrub the dirt off with a brush. Wash the soap off with a wet cloth or dip the shoes in water. You can also wash the shoes in a washing machine using warm, soapy water. Let them air-dry.

  2. Knock the soles of a pair of white canvas shoes together. This will remove loose dirt and any rocks or leaves inside. Next, remove the laces. Use a damp cloth to wipe off caked dirt and then wet the shoes with water. Remove spots from white canvas shoes with a soft toothbrush and soapy water containing a mild detergent. Stuff the shoes with paper towels or plain white paper as they air-dry and then spray them with a fabric protector. Wash the laces in the washing machine with white items or scrub them by hand. Let them air-dry.

  3. Use soap and water on white rubber shoes. Dip a cloth in soapy water and use it to wipe off the layer of dust and light marks. Scrub off stubborn marks with a brush dipped in the soapy water. Let the shoes air-dry or wipe them with a dry cloth.

  4. Wipe off mud and dust from smooth leather shoes. Use a soft cloth or shoe brush to brush it off. Clean the surface with a damp cloth and saddle soap. You can also use a mild soap, such as dishwashing liquid. Let the shoes air-dry and then apply a polish made for white shoes with a cloth.

  5. Use a suede brush on white suede shoes. This will remove dirt, dust, scuff marks and stains. If the shoes have water stains, wet the outside with a little water and then remove as much of it as possible with a sponge before letting white suede shoes air-dry. Use a suede protectant on the shoes when they are clean and dry.
