How To Clean A Microfiber Chair

As you use a microfiber chair, tiny particles of dust and dirt get pushed into the fibers. Weekly vacuuming is an easy way to prevent those particles from discoloring the fabric. Install an upholstery brush attachment and vacuum the chair using short strokes. The bristles agitate dirt particles and fluff the fabric at the same time.

Microfiber comes in many variations, some with specific cleaning requirements. Check the tag and look for a letter code.

X: Dry-brush or vacuum only

S: Dry-cleaning solvents

W: Water-based cleaners

W/S: Water-based or dry-cleaning solvents

If your chair has a W, W/S, or S code, rubbing alcohol is usually the safest option. Test it by dabbing a small amount onto a hard-to-see spot. Wait until it dries, smooth out the fibers with a nylon brush, and examine the area for signs of damage or discoloration. For W and W/S chairs, you can also test a mixture of dish detergent and water. As a third alternative, try a dry-cleaning stain remover to use on challenging stains; solvents are usually safe or W, W/S, and S chairs.

When removing stains from microfiber, always ensure you’re using a sponge or cloth that’s white or light-colored, as darker options can transfer their dyes to the microfiber upholstery. Then follow these steps:

1. When you find a stain, pour your tested cleaner into a spray bottle.
2. Spritz the alcohol onto the spot until it’s damp but not soaked. If you’re using a solvent, follow the application directions on the package.
3. Using a clean sponge or cloth, scrub the stain gently. Keep scrubbing, using circular motions, until the stain is gone.
4. Once the fabric dries, use a nylon brush to brush the area and restore its original softness.
