Buying a piece of furniture, like a chest of drawers, may seem like a straightforward sort of thing, and it definitely can be if you pay attention and cover all your bases. There are many variables to take into account when purchasing a chest. Just follow the steps below to ensure that you know how to buy a chest.

Buying a Chest of Drawers:

  1. Measure your space. Measuring your space may seem like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many people try to skip this simple step. Simply use a tape measure to find out the dimensions that are available to you for chest space and then double-check that against the dresser you want to purchase. Write them down if you're not 100 percent sure you'll remember them. If you don't measure the available space in your bedroom, you could end up with a chest that overwhelms your room and eats up your space. The feel of your room will change from restful to resentful. On the other hand, just as bad is a dresser that is too small. An undersized bedroom dresser makes the whole point of bedroom storage moot. Measuring your space solves both potential bedroom storage problems.

  2. Dresser storage options. What are you going to store in it? Make sure your drawers are deep enough and that you have enough dresser drawers to store what you want. This step ties back to the importance of measuring your space. Most clothes can be folded to fit in any space, but if you're storing shoes, your drawers may be too shallow for your favorite pumps.

  3. Pick your style. In addition to matching your chest of drawers to your current bedroom furniture, you've got to match your personal preferences. Would you be happier with a vintage or modern bedroom dresser? Think back to your space measurements. Would it be better to purchase an upright vertical dresser or is your bedroom big enough for a horizontal dresser? Pick your favorite from the many combinations available and you're well on your way to a stylish bedroom.

  4. Physical appearance. Have a firm idea of the kind of chest you're looking for before you start shopping. This will help you weed out the undesirables easily and save you a lot of time. Decide ahead of time if you want a black, white or wooden dresser. Do you want it to match your bed? A lot of it boils down to personal preference. Do you like knobs on your drawer or would you rather have a pull handle? Many chests today come with the option of pull out drawers or doors. Don't forget to choose a color; dressers and chests come in an assortment of maple wood, cherry wood, brown, black or white wood.

  5. Other considerations. Your chest options are unlimited, but remember to also consider investing in a dresser and mirror set. This sophisticated piece of bedroom furniture will enhance the feel of any bedroom with its elegance appearance.
