I was really excited to get this chess set based on the description and pictures. I received the chess set today and it definitely doesn't look as nice as the photos portray. The chess board looks like its cracked with gloss over it. The black squares look like they were painted on and not evenly. The chess pieces themselves are the worst part. Very poorly crafted. The cross on top of the kings are wiggly and easily could come off. The pieces are very misshaped and poorly carved. I have never written a bad review, but this was pretty bad. There are so many good reviews on here.. so maybe I just got unlucky with a bad set? Either way, not happy. Returning is almost a mute point, since you have to pay for shipping and the board is very heavy, so I can only imagine that the cost to return is not going to be cheap. I guess that's what you get when you purchase online.

The set is nice. The board is heavy and made of stone - no wood in the board. The white pieces are Onyx. The site says the black pieces are Marble, but I am not sure. They are made of heavy material. Felt on the bottom of pieces and board is low quality, may need to switch out. Chess Set approved by 16 yr old boy.

The board is a good size, as are the pieces, it makes a fine display and board to play with. The unique stones for each of the pieces make it a lasting set.

This is a lovely set to look at and hold. Each piece is individually wrapped and it is extremely well packaged. It is heavy and beautiful, we love it and have played many games. A beautiful set.

This is a very beautiful and substantial (in terms of weight, for the board is quite heavy) chess set. I love the frosted-marbeling effect on the white chess pieces. I purchased as a gift for my husband and he really loves it, unlike his previous (cheaper wooden set), this one is meant to be displayed for it is quite aesthetically pleasing.

I assure you that this is not onyx. Unless I misread the details, the black pieces are all made of some kind of hard plastic with a little weight. I was very disappointed.

Beautiful board and pieces. One did arrive broken, but glued easily. Quality set for a good price.
