This shelf was a breeze for my husband to assemble. It took very little time and effort. I have hardback books on one shelf, the lowest. The shelf is sturdy, but I would suggest securing it to the wall if you have little ones around. With its open design, it looks best when not stuffed with books. If you need a place to store lots of books, I would suggest a closed book shelf. Hope this info helps.
