Amazingly, not really! The only area that has any rust is just by the screws. We've left our two sets (four in total) outdoors uncovered and directly exposed to the elements, and so far they are still in basically pristine condition. We love ours and get so many complements on the set (we also have the matching bar). I'm sure as a safeguard you could treat them with something or try to keep them covered as well if you're still nervous about it
