The metal rods are decorative only. The mfr failed to make holes in the table to accommodate the installation of the metal rods that criss-cross under the table. The instructions were not included but the Utah-based distributor emailed promptly; however the instructions did not describe at all how to install the metal rods or where to attach. Since there were no holes created to align, it would be up to the consumer to use a drill and risk drilling the holes into the center rail. I might add, we purchased the matching chairs and the wood is brittle. A chair leg cracked and failed immediately because the bolt holes to secure the leg were made at a naturally formed knot in the wood --which split once assembled and sat on. I called the UT-based mfr to ask what to do about the metal rods where there were no holes and was put on hold for infinity by the Customer Service dept who was trying to have me discuss the issue with the Parts Dept (who never answered the phone). So our table sits, without the metal rods that we paid for because we don't want to risk damaging the critical center rail which stabilizes the four legs it attaches to in the course of drilling 3 holds there and under the table for metal rods.
