This was the fifth rug I tried for my living room. Buying rugs online isn't an easy process, especially large rugs. Colors are different on computer monitors, you can't get a sense of the density or softness of a rug, if there is an odor, etc. Plus, when looking for a large rug, it is very expensive to pay for return shipping if you don't like the rug. After paying for return shipping for three different rugs, I decided to order accent rugs (2'x3') of five different rugs from Great Offer Stock, figuring at least one of them would work in the room, and although I'd be paying return shipping costs for 5 rugs, the shipping costs would be a lot less than returning a 9'x13' rug. When the 5 small rugs arrived, this one was the perfect rug--right color, nice feel, and great price (about 40% of the cost of the same rug on other online rug websites.) So I ordered the 9'x13' size, but it had to be shipped as freight because it was over 8', and it was estimated to take 2-4 weeks (the rug warehouse is on the East Coast and I am on the West Coast). However, it only took a total of 10 days to receive the rug so I was very happy.
About the rug itself: part of my difficulty in finding the right rug is that my living is gray, but there are a zillion different undertones of gray and finding a rug with an undertone that didn't clash with my walls and decor was a challenge. I felt like Goldilocks: this one was too blue, this one was too green, this one was too lavender. But the one I ended up with was just right. It is gray, but with taupe undertones. And the trellis pattern is a neutral off-white, without the yellow undertones that you sometimes get with undyed wool.
The scale of the trellis pattern in the 9' x 13' rug is significantly larger than the pattern in the 2'x3' version I initially ordered, which makes sense, but I wasn't prepared for how large the scale was. However, it works in the room so I am pleased. Also, there is a little bit of viscose (art silk) in the off-white trellis pattern, but just enough to give it some dimension. Many rugs now are made with much of the pattern having art silk so that it appears a very different color depending on which way the 'nap' is laying, and it has a lot of sheen. (I know this from several of the earlier rugs I tried in the room.) I like the fact that this rug has so little art silk so that it doesn't have that effect.
The two downsides of the rug are that it smelled very musty when I laid it out on the floor. It had probably been sitting in a musty warehouse for a long time. I ended using an entire spray bottle of Febreze on it, which helped but didn't get rid of enough of the smell. I then used a carpet powder meant for odors (you sprinkle it on, wait, and then vacuum.) This worked much better. Also, I left the windows open in the room for a few days. After all that, the smell is almost gone.
The other downside is the shedding, which is a lot, but that is to be expected with a wool rug. If you want the beauty, feel, and durability of a wool rug, it is one of the things you have to put up with. Given the beauty of the rug and the unbeatable price at Great Offer Stock, the smell (which is now almost gone) and the shedding (which has diminished a lot after 4 vacuumings) were well worth it.
