Great manual lens for the price. Good addition to camera tools.

  • Does not work.

This was discribed as being compatible with my camera. To my dismay my camera did not acknowledge the lens. I was better off paying for a true Nikon lens.

  • a compromise

A previous review refers to a narrow field of view. I'm not sure what was expected, but as the magnification increases the width of field necessarily decreases. No matter who manufactures it, a 500mm lens will have a VERY narrow field of view. This is also a slow lens.As magnification increases, the field of view gets narrower, and less light is allowed to enter the lens. That is, only the light from the small region viewed enters. As the region gets smaller, so does the intensity of the light. Hence it requires a longer exposure longer shutter time to get enough light to expose film (or in the case of a digital camera, to register on CCD sensor). This makes the lens less useful for rapidly changing images, e.g., sports. To get a faster telephoto, the lenses (there are many in such a device) must be larger in diameter. Making large, precise lens is very expensive. A good, fast 500mm lens would cost in excess of $1000. Notice also that this lens has no VR/IS capability. With high magnification, and no vibration-reduction, a steady tripod is a must. What you get here is a compromise. Slow and with mediocre optics that introduce distortions, but at a very attractive price. Appropriate for medium-to-long distance still shots, e.g., the eagle on the tree limb.Don't expect crisp images, and be prepared for some noticeable color dispersion near edges.

Bought lens for lacrosse and nature picts. Did not have instructions so I'm still working on getting clear pictures. Better for still subjects rather than action. Not a lot of field of view. Was a good buy. I am happy with it.
